Flu Season Is Upon Us
Winter is here and with it comes daylight savings time. Not only do we have shorter days but, our ability to see the sun is dramatically reduced. It’s simply not possible to get an adequate amount of Vitamin D from our food which means we rely on sun exposure or taking supplements. The winter months always seem to bring unpleasant cold and flu viruses and much of this is likely due to Vitamin D deficiency.
In a 2010 study, it was found taking a vitamin D supplement was a highly effective way to reduce the likelihood of experiencing the flu. The RCT (randomized double blind control study) included 430 children ranging in age from 6-15. The study lasted from December 2008 to March of 2009. 50% of the children were given 1,200 iu’s of Vitamin D3 and the other half received a placebo. Testing for the influenze virus was perforemd with laboratory testing of nose and throat swabs.
18 of the children in the Vit D group contracted the flu (Type A) and 31 of the children in the placebo group were affected. The effect of Vitamin D3 was reduced by 42% at the 1200 i.u. dose and it is possible better results may be obtained with higher dosages depending on how deficient you are prior to supplementing with Vitamin D3.
This summary of an article from Integrative Medicine in 2010 explains most of us are actually deficient for Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to all of the following conditions:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Autoimmune diseases
- Multiple sclerosis
- Loss of Cognitive function
- Decreased strength
- Increased rate of all-cause mortality
The recommended dosing for Vitamin D3 is 35 iu per pound of body weight. For example, an individual weighing 150 lbs would require approximately 5,000 iu’s per day. And if you are terribly deficient, loading doses as high as 20,000 iu’s may be required.
At our office, our patients enjoy significantly improved immune system function as compared to those who aren’t receiving our care. One of the most important studies showing the positive effects a chiropractic adjustment can have on the immune system and general health was completed by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine at New York University. Dr. Pero measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care as compared to those in the general population and those with cancer and other serious diseases. His three-year study of 107 individuals who had been receiving chiropractic care for five years or more, the chiropractic patients were found to have a 200% greater immune competence than those individuals who had not received chiropractic care, and 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer and other serious diseases. You could be missing out on the chance to avoid the flu, getting sick frequently and actually enjoying this holiday season.
If you are also experiencing neck or back pain or other aches and pains, would like an ache and pain-free holiday AND don’t want to miss out on enjoying the holidays, just call today to schedule an initial exam. For those who mention, “Vitamin D3 for me” when scheduling, you can get the initial exam for $49 (reg. $279).
